Q&A with Tramaine Lamy

Did you get a chance to see Disney’s Lion King Live Action Movie? Did you know that one of our very own has been involved in The Lion King musical for quite some time now? Tramaine Lamy is a classically trained singer, actor, song-writer and director born and bred in Trinidad and Tobago. Presently, she serves as the longest standing female swing role in London’s Landmark musical, Disney’s ‘The Lion King’, covering the characters Rafiki, Sarabi and Shenzi. She has a double major in Theatre Arts and Communication Studies at the University of the West Indies.

 

Tramaine’s musical career began at an early age with the National Music Festival and blossomed as she entered adulthood with prominent roles in local productions such as Derek Walcott's 'Steel', Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'Crazy for You’, as well as the heavily Cacique awarded 'Fiddler on the Roof' and 'The Sound of Music’. She has played the lead role in several critically acclaimed musicals, including ‘Aida’ and ‘Disney’s Beauty and the Beast’ for which she received the Cacique Award for ‘Most Outstanding Lead Actress’ as Belle.

 

Before joining ‘The Lion King’, Tramaine served as a main-stage performer with the Walt Disney Cruise Line Company. Today, along with her role as a performer in The Lion King, Tramaine also serves as the production’s Children’s Director.

 

Q1. How long have you been involved in music?

I’ve been involved in music since my first junior choir in Newtown Girls’ R.C. Primary School at the age of five.

 

Q2. Who are/were your mentors in music?

My first mentor was a lady by the name of Mrs. Andrews. She was my first singing teacher and made me fall in love with singing! At St. Francois Girls’ College, Mrs. Varley was the music teacher who introduced me to classical singing. Finally, the most influential has been Mr. Jessel Murray. Mr. Murray has made me into the singer I am today and is the reason I’m where I am.

 

Q3. Who are your favourite artistes?

Jill Scott, John Legend, Stevie Wonder and Celine Dion.

 

Q4. What are your favourite movies? 

“Love & Basketball”, “Pride & Prejudice” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding”.


Q5. What is your favourite dish?

My mom’s fry bake and salt fish, my mom’s baked chicken and potato salad and my mom’s homemade bake and shark… anything my mom makes pretty much.

 

Q6. What was your highest moment in your professional life so far?

Highest moment is between having my entire family coming to London and seeing my show as Rafiki or performing with Sir Elton John for Prince William at the Evening Standard Awards! They both rock!

 




Q7. What was your lowest moment in your professional life so far?

Forgetting the words to my Broadway category music festival final song. Oye!

 

Q8. How has music impacted your life?

Music has been the vessel for me to express anything that isn't positive and turn it into something beautiful, in other words it’s been my saving grace!


Q9. What is your pet peeve?

Inconsiderate people.

 

Q10. What is the best advice you ever received?

“Eat little, live long” – My dad, Keith Lamy.

 

Q11. How has your experience at Disney’s Lion King been so far?

The experience has been amazing to say the least. I’ve learned so, so much about myself, my voice, my artistry, dealing with people, managing people and teaching people. I’ve grown so much had my lowest and highest moments here. I mean, this show was the only show, I’ve ever wanted to be in since I was 15 so this is literally living my dream.

 

Q12. What words of advice do you have for aspiring vocalists?

Take care of your instrument, everyone’s voice is different so what works for one person may not be for you and drink water!
